Weather
Today
76
degrees and sunny yesterday. The leaves are turning colors,
including yellowing of grape vines--especially those just
picked.
The
coincidence of grape harvest and vine shut down, as evidenced
by leaf yellowing, is a key measure of how appropriate
specific sites are for grape varieties.
Beginning
Sunday, looks like we'll see the first rain since 1/3 inch
two weeks ago, with an inch dropping over the week, interspersed
with sunny and dry.
Perfect
for MUSHROOMS and BOTRYTIS. Our late harvest will like
that.
TODAY
is Judy Peterson-Nedry's birthday.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Harvest 1999 October

Septic tank at The Chehalem House is having problems coping
with eight residents and their showers, clothes washing, dishwashing,
etc.
It gives
Miti and his gang something to dig at between picking days.
Looks like a new drain field. Maybe we should use it for drip
irrigation!
Our last Stoller Vineyards pinot noir batches are being drained
from fermentors, and the pomace pressed today. Same day as
the last Stoller Dijon chardonnay grapes are picked.
The
press is going full-tilt to keep up with whites and the interspersed
pinots. Tomorrow will see the first Dijon clone chardonnay
from Corral Creek Vineyards, from vines that were grafted
in 1997 and '98 (onto 108 clone plants).
We're doing investigative winemaking via the Internet, writing
friends in other areas regarding their techniques for vendage
tardive wines.
Although
we always harvest our Dry Riesling late harvest, we intend
to do a major quantity of pinot gris as VT. We're finding
out how others do it so we can build in some process comparisons.
Always
the nerds.
